What AI visibility means for a store
AI visibility is how often AI answers name or cite your store when people ask about what you sell. Someone asks Google for the best coffee subscription, and the AI Overview at the top names three stores before the first result. If yours isn’t one of them, that shopper may never scroll down to find you. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini do the same in their own apps.
A number on its own says little. “Cited in 17 answers” is good news if your closest rival has 6 and bad news if it has 36. So we never show your AI visibility without your competitors’ beside it.
In short: every week we count how many of Google’s AI Overviews cite your store and each competitor, for searches in your country and language, and show you the questions and the sources behind each count.
What we check every week
- Google’s AI Overviews. How many cite each website as a source, yours and each competitor’s, with the change since last week and the questions behind them.
- The sources AI trusts. The other websites the answers lean on for your market: review sites, magazines, marketplaces and forums. A source that cites a rival and not you is often the shortest way in.
- Your own facts (Scale). Whether answers that talk about your store get its prices, products and details right, checked against what your own website says.
- Your keywords. For each keyword you track in Google, whether the results show an AI Overview and which websites it cites.

What changes we tell you about
A weekly count is only useful if you hear when it moves. We bring up four kinds of change:
- A rival overtook you. A competitor is now cited in more answers than you, in one of your languages.
- A big move. Your count or a rival’s moved by more than usual since last week.
- A new question cites you. An answer that didn’t name you last time does now.
- A question dropped you. An answer that cited you no longer does. When the question is asked a lot, it’s in your weekly email.
Each finding links to the answer itself, with its sources, so you can read what the AI said and judge it yourself.

Can AI read your store at all
AI engines can only cite what their crawlers may read. On Scale, once a month, we check your website and each competitor’s for the things that decide that:
- robots.txt, for each AI crawler by name. Some stores block GPTBot or ClaudeBot without meaning to, through a setting at their host or CDN.
- llms.txt, the plain-text guide to a website that some AI agents read first.
- Structured data on your product pages: price, stock, brand and reviews in a form machines read without guessing.
- A sitemap that lists the pages you want found.
When a rival is ready and you aren’t, it’s on your list of what to fix.
How it fits with the rest
AI visibility is one of the ways we read your market. It sits beside your competitors’ prices and promotions, the pages they publish and change, and where they rank in Google. That’s deliberate. When a rival’s AI citations climb in the same weeks it published a buying guide and cut its prices, you see all three on one timeline, each with its date and its source.
We report what changed and what was true at the same time. We don’t claim one caused the other, and we don’t estimate anyone’s sales.
Over the Fence compared with dedicated AI visibility tools
| Prompt trackers such as Peec AI or OtterlyAI | Over the Fence | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | A list of prompts you write | Your store and the competitors you name |
| AI engines | Several, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, depending on the plan | Google’s AI Overviews |
| How often | Every day | Every week |
| Competitors’ prices, stock and promotions | No | Yes |
| Google rankings and keyword gaps | No | Yes |
| Entry price, monthly billing | $29 (OtterlyAI) and $95 (Peec AI) a month | $49 a month |
Prices are from each vendor’s own pricing page, read October 3, 2026. If AI answers are all you want to measure, and you want many engines every day, a dedicated prompt tracker is the better fit. If you want to know where you stand against your competitors, AI included, that’s what we built.
What it costs
Every plan reads your competitors every week and starts with 3 days free. Starter is $49 a month for 3 competitors, Growth $119 for 6 and Scale $249 for 12. Starter has basic AI visibility. Growth and Scale have full AI visibility and citations. Scale adds the check of your own facts in AI answers and of whether AI crawlers can read each store.
