Ahrefs and Over the Fence answer different questions

Use Ahrefs for SEO and Over the Fence to know what each rival changed. Ahrefs has Site Explorer for any site’s keywords and backlinks, Rank Tracker for rankings and Brand Radar for AI answers. It also makes Firehose, which watches the pages you list for text changes. Over the Fence reads the rivals you name for you. Every day it reads the top of each rival’s homepage, banners included, and the prices of a short list of its products. Every week it reads their whole sites, then tells you what changed and what to do first.

Side by side

The job of watching rivals

What did my rivals change, and what should I do about it? Here is what each of us does for that question.

Over the Fence and Ahrefs, side by side, for each part of watching rivals
The jobOver the FenceAhrefs
Every page of each rivalEvery week we read each rival’s whole site, up to 500, 2,000 or 8,000 pages a website by plan, and list the pages that are new, gone or changed.Site Explorer shows any site’s top pages, keywords and backlinks. Page Inspect shows when a competitor updated a page.3
Homepage bannersEvery day we read the top of each rival’s homepage as a browser shows it. A vision model reads the banners, and we keep each banner as proof.Firehose, an Ahrefs product, rechecks the pages you list, as often as every 10 minutes on its Starter plan and every 5 on Advanced, and records the text added and removed.7,8
Offers and their termsEach offer with its percent off, code, who gets it and when it ends. A new sale is followed to the page it leads to, where we count its products and how deep the cuts go.Firehose’s Smart Digest, in beta, can follow what competitors ship and price and report what changed.9
Prices of named products10, 25 or 50 rival products a site, by plan, read every day. You also hear when one sells out or comes back.Ahrefs suggests its free Website Change Monitor for catching a rival’s price change on a page you name.6
What a shopper paysA rival’s price after its running offer, beside your closest product. Not on the pages we read.
An alert when a rival starts a saleAn email the same day a rival starts a sale for everyone at least as deep as your prices rule, which starts at 10%.Ahrefs Alerts cover backlinks, web mentions and keyword rankings. Firehose alerts by email, Slack, Teams or webhook when a watched page changes.5,6
What AI answers sayEvery week on Growth and Scale: which sites Google’s AI Overviews cite for your searches, with your share beside each rival’s. On Scale, whether those answers get your facts right.Brand Radar covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Lite tracks 5 custom prompts, Standard 10 and Advanced 20, as often as daily.1,2
The week in one placeOne email a week with three findings at most, each with its reason and what to do first.A Smart Digest report refreshes from hourly to weekly.9

“Not on the pages we read” means the Ahrefs pages under Sources don’t describe it. Ahrefs may still offer it somewhere we didn’t read.

Together

How teams use both

  1. Keep Ahrefs for backlinks, keyword research, rank tracking and Brand Radar.
  2. Add Over the Fence for the rivals you name. It reads their offers, banners and prices for you and puts each beside yours.
  3. When Ahrefs shows a rival gaining search traffic, Over the Fence shows what that rival changed on its site the same week. We don’t claim one caused the other.
  4. Agencies add each client as a site, with that client’s rivals. Each of the week’s three findings links to its source, so it can go straight to the client.
  5. Ahrefs has an MCP server too, so one AI assistant can ask both about the same rival. Ours comes with every plan, with 2,500, 10,000 or 100,000 requests a month.

Is Over the Fence an alternative to Ahrefs?

Not for SEO. Ahrefs’ backlink, keyword and rank data go much further than ours. Over the Fence answers a narrower question: what did each of your rivals change, and what should you do about it? If you use Ahrefs for SEO, keep it and add us for your rivals.

Can Ahrefs watch a competitor’s website for changes?

Yes. Its free Website Change Monitor shows a page’s changes over the past year. Firehose, an Ahrefs product, watches the pages you list and records the text added and removed. Firehose is free for 5 pages and $39 a month for 50, per firehose.com on October 3, 2026.

Does Ahrefs track a rival shop’s prices and offers?

Ahrefs suggests its Website Change Monitor and Firehose for catching a price change on a page you name. We found no feature in Ahrefs’ or Firehose’s docs that reads a rival’s prices, stock or offers product by product (checked October 3, 2026). That is the part Over the Fence does every day.

What does Over the Fence add to Ahrefs?

We read each rival shop for you. Every day we read the top of its homepage, banners included, and the prices of a short list of its products. Each offer comes with its terms, and when a rival starts a sale for everyone at least as deep as your prices rule, you get an email that day. Every week we read their whole sites and send three findings at most.

How much do Ahrefs and Over the Fence cost?

Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month billed monthly, Standard $249 and Advanced $449. Brand Radar’s AI data is an add-on from $199 a month, per Ahrefs’ pricing page and help center on October 3, 2026. Over the Fence costs $49 a month for 3 rivals, $119 for 6 and $249 for 12, billed monthly.
